Question

What happens when your dependent erroneously chooses "I cannot be claimed as a dependent by others"?

I filed my taxes claiming my disabled daughter as a dependent. Almost simultaneously she filed her own return (she received a W2 this year) where she erroneously indicated that she could not be claimed as a dependent by anybody else. Her electronic Turbo Tax return was accepted by the IRS, mine was rejected. I then had my daughter file an amended return, where she corrected the error. The amended return was also accepted by the IRS.

The question is now, what do I do with mine? It is absolutely correct, there is nothing to change. Should I just sit and wait that the IRS reverses its rejection and accepts my original return, or should I file an "amended" return (with no amends) to force the IRS to reconsider, or should I somehow resubmit my original return? And whatever the recommended strategy, who do I I implement it in Turbo Tax?

You can print, sign and mail your return that claims her, or you can try getting an IP PIN and e-file it again.

GET IP pin in order to e-file if your dependent’s SSN was claimed on another return
