What is considered an HSA personal contribution? I have money taken out automatically from my check and put into the HSA, does that count as a personal contribution?

No, contributions made through your employer that are tax-free do not count as personal contributions.  You would have to send the money yourself online or by check.

Note that the employer contributions are counted in your yearly maximum amount.
