Montana allows you to either take the standard deduction, or itemize your deductions, based on the choice you made for your federal tax return.

If you took the standard deduction for your federal return, you will do the same for Montana.

If you itemized your deductions for your federal return, use your federal itemized deductions, minus any state income tax deducted (state income tax is not allowed to be deducted for Montana).  The result is your Montana itemized deductions. ‌The exception to this is if removing state income taxes results in itemized deductions that are less than the standard deduction.‌ If this is your result, you may take the standard deduction for MT.
