Question

What year do I claim my property tax in if it's listed on the 1098 for 2023 but the city posted payment in 2024?

You would claim it in the year you paid it, it does not matter what year the city posted it.  If you sent the check in 2023, you would claim it in 2023.  If you sent the check in 2024, then you would claim it on your 2024 return.

if you made the payment in 2024, deduct in 2024. in some places are 1 year behind in assessing taxes like most of illinois.  so 2023 taxes are generally paid in 2024. however in some cases, again like most of illinois, they allow prepayment of part of the taxes so if paid in 2023 that's when it's deductible.
