Home improvements are not normally reported on a tax return, there are no tax breaks for remodeling unless it was done on a rental or as an energy efficient improvement.

Was the roof replacement done on your personal residence?

Does it qualify as energy efficient?

It is my own personal home, purchase as a first time home buyer. It is a traditional shingled roof. So the only thing I can list are the new windows correct?

    Yes.

"Beginning January 1, 2023, the credit becomes equal to the lesser of 30% of the sum of amounts paid for qualifying home improvements or the annual $1,200 credit limit. In addition, to the aggregate $1,200 limit, annual dollar credit limits apply to specific items including:

    • home energy audits: $150
    • exterior doors: $250 per door (up to $500 per year)
    • exterior windows and skylights, central A/C units, electric panels and related equipment, natural gas, propane and oil water heaters, furnaces or hot water boilers: $600"

"Generally, expenses made to upgrade or replace a roof in preparation for installing solar panels and related equipment aren’t qualified to claim the Residential Clean Energy Credit because they primarily serve as a roofing or structural function.

However, if you invest in certain types of solar roofing equipment like solar roofing tiles and shingles which serve as both a form of solar electric generation and traditional roofing, such investments can qualify for the credit."

    Entering Energy Home Improvements:

    1. Open your return (if not already open).
    2. Enter "energy improvements"  in the Search box.
    3. Click on "Jump to energy improvements" link.
    4. Enter "Yes" to the question, "Did you make any energy efficient improvements in 2024 or have a carryforward from 2023?". Click on Continue.
    5. Enter energy improvements information, and Continue.
