Are you trying to enter self-employment expenses? If so, regular meals are not deductible, as you would have had these expenses anyway. Meals are only deductible under the following circumstances:

Meals are generally deductible if incurred while traveling on business or while entertaining a client, customer, or employee. A deduction for meals is generally limited to 50% of the expense. The limit also applies to taxes and tips relating to a meal. [IRC §274(n)]

To enter allowable self-employment expenses:

1) Once in your return, click Federal (left-hand menu bar)

2) Click Income & Expenses at the top.

3) Look for Self-employment income and expenses.

  • You may have to expand the choices in the Income & Expenses section to get this subsection to appear.

4) Click Start when you find this section, and follow the guided interview.
