Where do you enter new roof costs on a home office?

I have a home office and am self employed.  The system prompted me to add it to an asset section but I can't see where this is to be entered.

The additional asset (the new roof) is added just like the original house where the home office operates. When you are in the 'Home Office' expense category (selected under Add expenses for this work in TurboTax Online). You may already have this category available since you had a Home Office in the past.

Once you step through the Home Office expense category, you will review the information for your original home asset.  When that is complete you will see the option to add another asset.  Click this to add the new roof and use the same square feet that you use for your original home office.

  • See the image below.

Keep in mind that you also have the option to use the newer simplified method for the home office.  Simplified Option for Home Office Deduction

  • You may choose to use either the simplified method or the regular method for any taxable year.

What do you need to add @Lauraleon123?    You said you submitted your return, but has it been accepted yet?   If it has not been accepted and it ends up getting rejected, you can add whatever forms or information you left off and re-submit your tax return.   If it has been accepted or it does get accepted in the next few hours, you will have to file an amendment to add or remove any information.    The amending software for tax year 2021 is not ready yet.  Currently, it is set to be available on 02/24.

Before you amend, make sure that you really need to amend.   You didn't say what you forgot to put, so I am not sure if you need to amend or not.   If you do need to amend, keep these instructions and check back at the end of the month.      Your question is showing up on a home office thread.    Make sure that you can deduct home office expenses before you amend to do so.  To verify this, see Can I deduct Home Office Expenses on my tax return?
