Question

Why did I only get 1 child tax credit but have 2 child I'm claiming

This year I'm claiming both my children while in previous years my wife claimed my stepson and I claimed our youngest son. She didn't work this year though so I am head of household that took care of all financial obligations for both children. However I am only being quoted for 1 child tax credit and and another person credit?

Q.  However I am only being quoted for 1 child tax credit and and another person credit?

A. It sounds like the eldest turned 17 in 2023.  Over 16 doesn't get the child tax credit.  Another possibility, you identified the relationship as other, rather than son or daughter. For taxes, step child is same as child.  Third possibility, if the child doesn't live with you, more than half the year, you need to answer the questions about agreements carefully.

If you are married and living with your spouse, you are not allowed to file as Head of Household.

Your filing choices are Married Filing Jointly (MFJ) or Married Filing Separately (MFS). MFJ is almost always better even if She didn't work this year.

What status did you use last year and why? You may need to file amended returns.
