Question

Why do I need to upgrade? You have a Health Savings Account (HSA) This is total BS.... something that has no effect on my return is going cost more

I have a simple tax return, about as simple as it gets and trying to force me to pay $110 to file this is ridiculous, I was going to pay for the deluxe because I wasn't trying to just get some free service but this is unacceptable.   I will be using another service, I don't care if I get less on my return, I'm not filing here on principal alone.

It does have an effect on your tax return even though you may note believe it affects your refund. (It actually does though.)

Your HSA contribution lowers your taxable income (which really does affect your refund, you just don't see it in the fancy little meter in the software program since it is usually built into your W-2).  An HSA contribution requires two additional tax forms to be added to your return - Schedule 1 and Form 8889.

Both of these, particularly Form 8889 require a good bit of data.

Your return entries may be simple for you, but you are no longer filing a simple tax return.  It's actually quite far from "as simple as it gets" now.   You are filing a relatively complex return - there are plenty far more complex - but this isn't a "simple" return any more.

You aren't paying for a refund - you are paying for an accurate, complete tax return.  (return is the document, not the money you get.)
