Question

Why does the program is calculate my 17 yo child met the requirements of the CTC if she was 17 on 12/31/23. I checked her info is accurate entered.

I have typically listed my child as a dependent. In April 2023 she turned 17, which would make her no longer eligible for child tax credit. The program is still calculating the $2,000 credit, but the IRS has rejected my tax return because she does not qualify.  Any guidance would be helpful on how to solve this issue. She is still under 18, so she is still technically a dependent.

Go back to the My Info section and edit her as the dependent.  Check the date of birth and verify that it correct and in the MM/DD/YYYY format.  If it is correct then delete her as a dependent and re-enter.  See if the program now shows her as Other Dependent with a $500 credit.

I followed the recommendation and it is still adding her with tax credit. It seems to be a program issue.
