Question

Why does Turbo tax make me break out my medical expenses into categories like prescriptions? Is that required by the IRS? I know the total and don't want to waste time.

TurboTax goes through the categories to remind you of what can be deducted and to try to make sure you don't leave anything out. You don't have to enter all the categories separately. Just enter the total in one category. Only the total goes on your tax return.


Keep the detailed records, though, including payment records, receipts, EOBs, etc. If the IRS audits your medical expenses you will have to be able to show how you arrived at the total.
