Question

Will I be able to use my over $8000 for tools I've bought throughout this past year for a tax right off as an Auto-Technician seeing as they are for my job?

I work in the automotive industry and have had to buy tools to be able to do my job, as well as move up and keep my job. Can I use these as right off given that I have the receipts covering the past year?

Are you a W-2 employee or are you an independent contractor?

-W-2 employees cannot deduct job-related expenses on a federal return.  Job-related expenses were eliminated as a federal deduction for W-2 employees by the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond.  Your state tax laws might be different in AL, AR, CA, HI, MN, NY or PA.

If you are an independent contractor then tools you purchased go on your Schedule C when you enter  all of your business expenses.

If you are an employee who receives a W-2 from your employer, the employee business expenses are not deductible on a federal tax return due to the tax code changes in effect for tax years 2018 thru 2025.
