Question

Will I get any money back from my moving expenses, which were 11,000 dollars, even if it was a military move? I said I got nothing from the government back.

The moving expenses were for my dogs and I was told to file them as a moving expense. I put them under the transporting and storing household goods section of the moving expenses portion in the itemized deductions area.

This is different from a refundable credit as a refundable credit will give you money back as opposed to just lowering your tax liability. Your moving expenses will only lower your taxable income which will in turn lower your tax liability.

So whether or not you get money back due to your moving expenses will depend on how much you paid in that could be refunded to you.

So input my information, and even after everything was input, my refund didn't change at all.

That’s entirely possible.

Even if you’re eligible for the adjustment as a service member, all that it will do is lower your taxable income.

If your taxable income is already zero, it will make no difference.

To see your taxable income, look at your Tax Summary in TurboTax Online:

  1. If you’re on the Hi TurboTax Client, let's keep working on your taxes! screen, click the Pick up where you left off button

  2. In the left pane, select Tax Tools

  3. Then, under that, select Tools

  4. In the Tools Center pop-up, select View Tax Summary under Other helpful links

Moving expenses would appear as Adjustments to income.

If, before inputting moving expenses, your taxable income was already zero, the expenses would have no effect.
