Question

Will I still get the recovery rebate if I am claimed as a dependent?

I missed out on both stimulus payments last year because my mother claimed me as a dependent by accident. I filed my taxes this afternoon with the recovery rebate checked to see if I could finally receive it. However, this afternoon my mom told me that she plans to claim me again this year. Is her action going to cancel out my rebate and if it doesn't initially do so, will I have to pay this money back?

If you already filed and did not check the box that someone else can claim you on their return, you will qualify for the Recovery Rebate Credit.

FYI, when your mom files her taxes, she will not be able to claim you as a dependent.

If you have to file an amended income tax return in order for your mom to claim you, you will have to pay back the credit.
