Sorry no.   See IRS Schedule A page A-6 third column line 7 on what items you can add to the sales tax table. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040sca.pdf

    You can only add

    1.  A Motor Vehicle

    2.  Aircraft or Boat

    3.  A Home

    Major purchases do NOT include:

    -Furniture

    -Jewelry

    -Home electronics

    -Appliances

Sales tax is an itemized deduction.  Unless you have enough other itemized deductions to exceed your standard deduction the sales tax will have no effect on your tax due or refund.

“Major purchases” that you can enter for the sales tax deduction include:

Motor Vehicles (cars, trucks, motor homes, RV’s, sport utility vehicles and off-road vehicles

    Aircraft or boats

    Mobile homes

    Manufactured housing

Building materials for major home improvements

You cannot deduct: furniture, jewelry, home electronics such as TV’s or computers

The term "major purchase" is extremely misleading, and I wish the IRS and tax programs would not use it.  The only thing that qualifies is the purchase of a home (or major renovation), or purchase of a motor vehicle or airplane.

One of the problems with the definition of a "major purchase" is that they have been using that same verbiage since before a kitchen appliance like a refrigerator now costs as much or more than a Cadillac used to cost.
