Wrong Estimated Tax Payment Discovered After Return was E-Filed

I just E-Filed a federal return and discovered the 2nd quarter 2023 payment for $500 was not made, thus overstating the tax payments made on the return.  The balance due on the original E-Filed return was $124 and is set to be debited from our bank account on April 8, 2024.  Do I need to file an amended return or can we simply go to the IRS website and make a $500 payment?  If so, payment under what category?

First, you will not have to amend your tax return.

  • The IRS will quickly know that the payment wasn't made.
  • You have two alternatives.
    • Do nothing, and the IRS will send you a tax notice and simply take $650 from your account.
    • Or, you can make either the $500 or $650 payment online.  Be sure it is for the 2023 tax year!
