I am the co-signer - my daughter is in the Air Force now.  She was a dependent when we took out the loan for college.  She is not claiming the interest - I have been paying the loan -  the 1098-E is in her name -

When entering my numbers into TurboTax - the site says that the IRS will only let you claim the student loan interest deduction IF your name in on the 1098-E form ???  Is this correct ???

    Q. TurboTax - the site says that the IRS will only let you claim the student loan interest deduction IF your name in on the 1098-E form.  Is this correct ???

    A. No.

You can claim the interest deduction, if you meet the three requirements:

    1. You paid the interest
    2. You are legally obligated to pay it (co-signing counts)
    3. The student was your dependent, at the time the loan was used to pay for qualified educational expenses

Enter at the 1098-E screen as if it were yours
