1098-T lists the amount charged for tuition, but does not list the amount I received for grants an scholarships. Box is checked that it is for Spring 2017.

1098-T only shows tuition costs, but scholarships and grants are not listed.  I was told grants and scholarships would be on the one for next year, so I do not want to receive money this year that I shouldn't and pay money next year that I shouldn't owe. The box is checked for Spring of 2017.  All amounts will about equal for 2017 after the costs of books and materials (money I received and costs).  What should I do?

For tax year 2016, the IRS requires schools issue a 1098-T with the option of reporting either Box 1 “Amount received by the school” or Box 2 “Amount billed by the school”.

This can be confusing because often the school bills in December for classes that start in the next year.

The Taxpayer can ONLY claim what they paid in 2016 (including anything paid on their behalf, such as scholarships).

You are right to realize that you are not eligible for an education credit this year.

And yes, the scholarships and grants will be reported next year, in the year that they are received.

You can enter the 2016 1098-T into the program, but under box 2 click on "What if this is not what I paid?" and enter zero.

This way you will not erroneously apply for an education credit.

Save the 2016 1098-T with your records, along with a student account statement and receipts.

Next year the schools are required to report Box 1 "Amount the school received" which should make things less confusing.
