1098T and 1099Q
Our Spring of 2020 bill was due 12/23/19, so we paid it from the 529 account. Now our 1099Q shows this as a distribution but the 1098T we received from the college isn't showing the 2020 expenses obviously. So our 1099Q is much higher than the qualified expenses on the 1098T. I'm trying to see if I can get something revised from either school or 529, but until then I am struggling. When I am helping my son (the student) file his taxes, we enter the 1099Q on his and it shows a big tax due since it exceeds the qualified expenses. However if I enter the 1098T info on his tax return (I know this is supposed to be entered on mine), it reduces his tax due by quite a bit even though it is saying that he doesn't get the deduction since he is my dependent. My question is, is it OK to go ahead and enter the 1098T on BOTH of our returns since it is only letting me take the deduction anyway? As I said, it tells me he doesn't get the deduction, but it does reduce his tax bill by quite a bit when I enter it.
