Question

1098T not recognizing dependent as student, showing parent as student

I am trying to enter my son's (my dependent) 1098t but TurboTax keeps showing me, the parent, as the student. It will not recognize my son/dependent as the student. I tried to "add" a student and enter a 2nd one, still doesn't work, I tried to edit the 1098t, that doesn't work either. Deleted everything and tried a fresh start, nothing. HELP!!

Here's how to edit the 1098-T in TurboTax:

From Deductions & Credits

Expenses and Scholarships (form 1098-T) hit Update

From the page that says Now Let's Gather The Additional Education Expenses

Hit Continue. You will need to continue through several screens until you get to the screen that says Your Education Expenses Summary click Edit

At Here's Your Education Summary you can Edit, Delete or Add New School.

If you are listed here as the Student select delete.

On the next screen it will ask about deleting you as a student. Select yes and then select Add New Student.

This did not work. I deleted the 1098T but when I try to add new student it still shows me (the parent) automatically, it doesn't give me an option to choose my son, the dependent as the student. Plus there is no where to enter the name on the 1098T. It just defaults to me but 1098T is in his name.

Once you have entered or re-entered your child as a dependent, then the program should prompt you to select him as a recipient of the Form 1098-T

Is your son showing up as a dependent? Please make sure:

  1. On the Do You Have Children or support someone? screen, answer Yes.
  2. On the Who Do You Support? screen, answer one of the first two options.
  3. On the Tell Us About Your Child screen, verify the birth date and citizenship status.
  4. On the How many months did XXX live with you in 2019 screen, select the whole year or the right number of months lived with you
  5. At the How many of those months were in the U.S.? box, select the whole year or the right number of months lived with you
  6. On the We know XXX is a baby/child, but we have to ask: Did she pay for most of her living expenses? answer No if she did not.
  7. Continue with the onscreen questions.
  8. Go to the end of the dependent entry section of TurboTax.

Yes he is. I rechecked all these questions and they were already correct.

Has anyone figured out the solution to this completely irritating problem. I have also tried EVERYTHING in this thread and nothing works. My "PARENT" name still populates the 1098T section. This will be a deal breaker. We have 7 more years of college to go thru!

If your name is coming up as the student, you should delete form 1098-T and start again.

How do I view and delete forms in TurboTax Online?

  • Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  • In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools.
  • In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
  • Select Delete next to 1098-T  in the list and follow the instructions.

Here's how to get to the 1098-T screen directly:

  1. Open (continue) your return, if you don't already have it open.
  2. Search for 1098t and select the Jump to link at the top of your search results.
  3. On the Do you want to enter your higher education expenses? screen, answer Yes.
  4. Answer Yes to Did you get a 1098-T for the year? and Continue.
  5. On the next screen, you can choose how you'd like to add your 1098-T. You can upload a digital copy from your computer or type it in yourself. Select which option you'd like and Continue.

From the Education Expenses Summary screen you can:

  • Select Add A Student if you need to enter a 1098-T for someone else (and then resume steps 4 and 5 above); or
  • Select Edit to revisit the 1098-T for a previously-entered school or Add New School to enter a new 1098-T.

Some important tips about entering this form:

  • Parents: If the student listed on the 1098-T is your dependent, enter the 1098-T on your return – even if your dependent paid the tuition.
  • Students: If you're not being claimed as a dependent, you can enter the 1098-T on your return regardless of who paid the tuition unless it was your employer. In that case, just keep the 1098-T with your tax records.
  • Enter your 1098-T exactly as is even if the amounts are wrong (this is common). You'll get a chance to correct this info and enter additional expenses later in the Education interview.
  • Leave blank boxes blank. Don't enter 0 for any blank boxes on the form, as this generates errors.
