Question

1099 misc

I received a 1099 Misc for $600 of income as a substitute teacher.  Why do I have to fill out a schedule c with it? The turbo tax program seems to be making me associate the 1099 misc with a business I own but I don't own a business; it was a company called Tagg education that I was employed through that issued me the 1099 misc instead of a w2

You were working as an independent contractor, which means you were self-employed as far as that income goes.  As a result, you have to report that income on Schedule C.

You may not have any expenses to enter on a Schedule C since you were a substitute teacher. and would not have been buying classroom supplies, etc.  (Did you buy any books to take to school with you to use as read alouds, etc.?)

But since you have self-employment income reported on that 1099Misc you are subject to self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare.  The school did not withhold those and pay the employer's part so you have to pay all of it--15.3% of your earnings.

You may want to use Free File to prepare your return if you qualify -- you certainly do not want to have to pay to use online Self-Employed.

FreeFile will have the forms and schedules you need for self-employment income.

    Try Free File:

You qualify if your income was $36,000 or less, or $69,000 or less if active duty military, or if you qualify for Earned Income Credit
