I received a 1099-nec form for a non employee compensation I received from my child’s school district.  Her school does not offer a bus so they give us $ to pay for the transportation.  When filing, the options for the type of work don’t apply because this want a job.  How do I file this?

Here is how to report the 1099-MISC to not create a business:

  • Navigate to Federal > Wages & Income > Other Common Income> Form 1099-MISC> Start or Revisit
  • Enter the 1099-MISC as printed, Continue
  • Describe the reason for this 1099-MISC: "Transportation Rebate" or similar.
  • Select None of these uncommon situations apply, then continue
  • Select No, it didn’t involve work that's like your main job and continue
  • The next screen asks how often you get income from this source.  Select only the year of this specific 1099-MISC, 2024.

After entering your 1099-NEC, you will encounter a screen titled "Does one of these uncommon situations apply".  Check the box "This is not money earned as an employee or self employed individual; it is from sporadic activity or hobby".

Checking that box will put the income on line 8 of Schedule 1 as "other income".
