1099-Q question re: Coverdell ESA and 529
My son received a 1099-Q for a CESA. Is it correct that he does not need to report this 1099-Q in TurboTax as long as he maintains records that his qualified education expenses were at least as much as the ESA distribution? This is what the first paragraph on the 1099-Q instructions seem to say, and Pub 930 says "Generally, distributions are tax free if they aren't more than the beneficiary's adjusted qualified education expenses for the year. Don't report tax-free distributions (including qualifying rollovers) on your tax return." Box 2 on his 1099-Q is zero.
For my (parent's) return for entering the addt'l 529 distribution, I would then deduct his ESA claimed amount from the amount I am claiming against the 529 distribution so that I am not double-dipping, right?
