1099Q - Who Reports?
My son received distributions from a 529 plan opened by my parents (his grandparents). He is listed as the recipient on the 1099Q. We're claiming him as a dependent on our return, and he will need to file his own return as well because he has other income. A portion of the earnings reported on the 1099Q will be taxable. I understand from reading responses in other threads that I should enter the 1098T information on my return and claim the American Opportunity Credit. My question is which return should I enter the 1099Q? I have seen responses in other threads that seem contradictory, so I'm just hoping to clarify. Do I enter the 1099Q on my return because he's a dependent, or on his return because the 1099Q was issued in his name (with his SSN)? Or should I enter it on both? Thanks
