Question

2020 1098T when you paid tuition in 2019

For 2020, my scholarship amount is greater than my expenses in box 1 which creates taxable income. This is happening because it was my last semester, and I paid my tuition for 2020 in Dec 2019 so it’s not in the box 1 total.  Do I have any way to address this as my qualified expenses for the semester were greater than my scholarships by quite a bit.

The 1098-T is only an informational document. The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your tax return. You claim the tuition credit, or report scholarship income, based on your own financial records, not the 1098-T. If you know it all comes out even, just don't enter the 1098-T.

If you need to report some of it, but need to adjust the amounts:  In the 1098-T screen, click on the link "What if this is not what I paid the school" underneath box 1. You will then be able to enter the actual amounts paid. You will also reach a screen that allows you to adjust the scholarship amount for "amounts not awarded for 2020 expenses".
