Question

2021 1098-T form has box 1 filled. 2022 1098-t does not. Do I leave box 1 blank or fill with 2021 box 1 (The forms are from the same school)?

The box 1 amount from 2021 was included in 2021 taxes. For some reason when TT asks if I had a 2021 1098-T and I reply yes it tells me I need to fill in an amount for Box 1 even though box 1 is blank for 2022...

The program is trying to figure out if something posted on your 2022 that relates to 2021.

For example, did the school bill you in 2021, but a scholarship posted in 2022 for that tuition which was billed/paid in 2021.

Please check your school account statement and look for anything that overlapped.

Make sure you are only claiming expenses that were PAID in 2022 on your 2022 tax return.

If a scholarship posted (in Box 5) of your 2022 1098-T, but there is no number in Box 1 of your 2022 1098-T, that would indicate that you received a scholarship in 2022, but had no expenses. That would indicate that you "pocketed" cash which would need to be claimed as income. Did this happen?

OR did a scholarship post in 2022, but paid tuition for the first three moths of 2022 which the school posted on your 2021 1098-T?

If there are adjustments on your 2022 1098-T, or your 2021 1098-T has Box 7 checked, there may be numbers spread over two years. The credits are based on calendar year.

If  the program is asking, it wants to know if Box 1 on your 2021 1098-T included a scholarship that posted on your 2022 1098-T.
