Hi.  I was set to get approximately $1,800 back and then I entered our out of pocket college expenses.  Our daughter had $1,800 in scholarships and we paid approx $1,800 out of pocket.  When I enetered her 1098 form, the amount we were getting back dropped from about $1800 to $53.  How does that make sense if we paid out of pocket.  Shouldn't the amoutn we are getting back increase or at least stay the same?  Why would that make us basically get nothing back if we paid for expenses out of pocket?

If it takes all of our return away after entering college expenses, can we just not enter them or should our daughter file herself?  She has a part time job and made under 3k so she didn't plan on filing herself.

The generic answer is: you cannot go by that "refund meter" until all the info is entered.  Then review your forms for any inaccuracies.

What is in boxes 1 & 5 of the 1098-T?  did you enter any book expenses, not shown on the 1098-T.  Are you sure you identified your dependent daughter as the student and not you or your spouse?
