Solved

Attended college spring 2018. 2017 received a 1098-T box 1-$0, box 2 -$2200. Have not rec'd updated 1098-T for 2018. Is it common to get updated 2018, 1098-T?

Schools were able to report Box 1 (What was paid to the school) or Box 2 (What was billed by the school).  Now they MUST report Box 1.

Sounds like your school billed you in 2017 for classes that started the first 3 months of 2018. Since Box 1 has 0, it would seem that you paid in 2018, unless Box 1 is simply blank, because the school did not report Box 1.

If you paid in 2018, you should get a 2018 1098-T with the payment in Box 1 and you can use that amount on your 2018 return.

If you paid in 2017, and the school just didn't report Box 1, that amount could only have been used on your 2017 return.

Check the student's school account statement, and make sure the school is reporting the amount paid correctly.

Whatever is paid in the year should be in Box 1.
