Question

Box 1 on the 1098T asks for tuition. But the option button below asks if that is not what we paid to the school. Is it asking for the total cost of attendance?

You will enter the total tuition expenses paid in 2020. If what is shown in box 1 is different from what you have actually paid in 2020, then you will select the button not what we paid to the school and enter the amount you paid in 2020.

Q.  Is it asking for the total cost of attendance?

A.  No.  Box 1 is  specifically for tuition and fees and no other "costs of attendance".  Box 1 does not include books, other required course materials (including a computer) or room and board.  There are separate place to enter those expenses (other "costs of attendance").
