Question

Can I claim a child's college expenses from a 1098-T and also claim that as a reason why I had an early distribution from a 1099-R?

Yes, there is an exception for the 10% early withdrawal penalty, if you use the money for higher education, but the distribution has to be from an IRA

If you made an early withdrawal from your 401(k), no, there is no exception for higher education. See What are the exceptions to the penalty for an early withdrawal from my 401(k)?

Once you enter the distribution information from your 1099-R form, we'll help you check for any exceptions that could reduce the tax.
