Can I claim AOTC as a F1 resident alien?

Hi,

I have been on a F1 visa since September 2016. I finished my Bachelor's degree, worked via OPT for a year, then did my Master's last year. Can I claim AOTC since I am considered a resident alien now, and I haven't claimed AOTC before? Thank you!

No, you are not eligible for the American Opportunity credit because you do not satisfy all the requirements for the credit since you have completed your Bachelor's degree.

For the American opportunity tax credit, an eligible student is a student who: (1) is enrolled in a program leading toward a degree, certificate or other recognized post-secondary educational credential; (2) has not completed the first four years of post-secondary education as of the beginning of the taxable year; (3) for at least one academic period is carrying at least ½ of the normal full-time workload for the course of study the student is pursuing; and (4) has not been convicted of a felony drug offense.

But, as a resident alien,  you are eligible for the Lifetime Learning Credit. Please see this TurboTax Help article for more information about this credit.
