Can I claim tax credit for a tuition bill paid the year after finishing school?

I finished school in mid-2016, but finished paying my tuition in 2017. Am I eligible to use that tuition paid as a tax credit?

You may not claim the money you paid in 2017. Payments must be made in the same year the education occurred to count for the credit, or deduction.

There is one exception to that rule, but it does not apply to your case. You may deduct, in 2017, any payments you made in 2017 for the first term in 2018 (or on your  2016 return, any payments you made in 2016 for the first term in 2017).
