Can I deduct apartment rent used for my kid college?

My kid is in Grad school and we pay his apartment rent monthly.  Can we deduct that on our taxes?  We claim as dependent if that helps.  Thank you.

Rental payments for the student are not a qualified education expense so cannot be entered on a tax return.

Thanks for your quick answer.  It'd be nice if I can deduct that $15k/year expense.

A. No.

There is no education "deduction", per se. There are two education credits, but room and board (on or off campus) is not a qualified expense for those credits.

 

Furthermore,  room and board  are not a qualified expenses for a scholarship to be tax free.

 

But room and board (on or off campus, even living at home) is  a qualified expense for a 529 Plan or ESA distribution to be tax free.
