Question

Can I deduct for room and board and how? After paying tuition, I used $5400 of my college scholarship and grant money for room and board expenses. My parents claim me.

You can't.

Room & board for college are not considered to be qualified expenses for purposes of the education credits.  Also, since your parents are claiming you, they will be the ones who would claim the education credits for you on their tax return.  The 1098-T form will need to be reported on your parent's tax return.

Tuition & fees deduction

If anything, your return will include in income the amount of scholarships not used for qualified education expenses.

Scholarships are taxable if used for the following items

  • Room & board
  • Travel & incidental expenses
  • Any fees, books & supplies not required for classes

Not taxable if used at an eligible school for a degree if:

  • Tuition & fees
  • Fees, books, supplies needed for classes
  • Scholarship or fellowship for services from:
    • National Health Services Corps Scholarship Program
    • Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship & Financial Assistance program
