Can I deduct the cost of Medical School Step 1 and Step 2 exam fees? If so, can I also deduct the cost of travel related to taking them? Thank you.

No.  Travel expenses and exam fees are not deductible expenses.  In order to claim an expense for education, they would need to be required by a course to complete the course.

Travel fees are never deductible for education purposes.

Q. Are Medical School Step 1 and Step 2 exam fees qualified expenses, for the Lifetime Learning Credit, if passing the exams are a requirement for graduation?

A. No, unless the fees were paid directly to the school.
