Can I file my son that is still in school tax document that he received from the college for taking a semester of classes? Yes or No?

My son that’s still in school received a 1098-T from the college and I was wondering if I could file it on my taxes?

Yes, if you are claiming your son as a dependent, you can use the 1098-T he received to apply for the American Opportunity Credit which is a $2,500 refundable credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit which is a $2,000 non refundable credit.

 

The AOTC is available for students who are in the first four years of a degree or credential seeking program

 

To qualify for either of these credits, you must have income of less than $90,000 (or $180,000 if Married Filing Jointly)

  • Show More next to Education
  • Start next to Expenses and Scholarships
