Question

Can I get a 1098-T or some other form if I wasn't enrolled but still paid past tuition expenses/balance?

I paid off over $4,000 of a previous student account balance this year, can I deduct this?

No, you can't deduct a past due tuition account balance. Your college or university issues the 1098-T Tuition form. You can't issue one to yourself.

  • Your tuition amount would have been reported on a 1098-T Tuition form in the year the tuition was incurred/billed.
  • Check your previous tax returns to see if you or whoever was claiming you took the credit on their income tax return.

If you paid student loan interest, you receive Form 1098-E Student Loan Interest.
