When I was studying I was an international student but I became a permanent resident last year. Can I still claim my American opportunity tax credit?

Thanks

You can claim an exception from receiving a 1098-T if you have all the information needed such as the school's EIN, the amount paid in 2022 and any financial aid received, such as scholarships and employer assistance,

    HOWEVER

you are NOT eligible for the credit if:

“You (or your spouse) were a nonresident alien for any part of 2022 and the nonresident alien didn't elect to be treated as a resident alien for tax purposes. More information on nonresident aliens can be found in Pub. 519, U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens.”

    Thank you for the clarification.

The weird thing is turbotax is allowing me to do that and it is just increasing my return by $2000.

If you meet the 'green card' test you can file using TurboTax and claim the American Opportunity Credit, as long as your Education Expenses exceeded your Grant/Scholarships.

The credit is meant to help you with your 'out of pocket' expenses.
