Question

Can I get an education deduction and use 1098T, if my dependent entered 1098T information on his return in TurboTax.

My dependent son prepared a tax return and entered educational expenses in TurboTax software (including information from 1098 T form) while preparing his return. Because he is a dependent, it had no effect on any of the amounts on his tax return. He e-filed his return and because he did not delete this information, I assume the Tuition Statement worksheet could’ve been submitted to IRS with information from 1098T. I will be claiming him as a dependent on my tax return. Should I be able to get a tax deduction for education expenses if I enter the information from his 1098 T on my return or should I amend his return. Income wise I qualify for the deduction. Thank you.

Simple answer: Yes.

Entertaining the 1098-T in TurboTax (TT) doesn't necessarily put anything on the tax forms and that's apparently what happened in his case.

As a dependent, TT will  not let him claim a credit or deduction..

He does not need to amend
