Question

Can I remove the American opportunity tax credit, as I've claimed it too many times. Id like to claim a different tax credit if possible. No way to do it myself?

I've received a letter from the IRS stating that I've claimed the American opportunity tax credit too many times. I'm trying to file an amended return and remove the credit, possibly replacing it with another credit if I'm able to. I'm not seeing a way to change which credit TurboTax is giving me, it just automatically defaults to the AoTC.

In the education interview, you are asked how many times you have previously claimed the AOTC. If you answer four, TurboTax (TT) will automatically exclude the AOTC and give you the Lifetime Learning credit (LLC), if you qualify for the LLC.

Alternatively,  type letme (no space between let & me) in the search box. Then press enter. Then  click  on the link "jump to letme''.

TT will give you the option to select another tuition  credit.

If that doesn't work, type letme (no space between let & me) in the search box. When the dropdown list appears, click on letme rather than "jump to letme'. On the next drop down, click on the "jump to letme” link.
