On the screen that asks how many months the student lived with you, read the small print. It says something along the lines of "Count time away for the primary purpose of attending school, as time having lived with you". Then select "The Whole Year" and press on. If you select anything other than "The Whole Year" you will lose out on a lot of deductions and credits related to the student as your dependent, and their status as a student.
