Can I take the American Opportunity Credit for my Student? the program asks for form 8863. Was filed for this student in '12, '13 and '14, but in 2015 I have form 8917?

The program asked me if we had taken the American Opportunity Credit in previous years, and told me to look for form 8863.  I found 8863 in 2012, 2013, and 2014 for this student. In 2015, there was no 8863 filed, but a 8917 was filed (I used TurboTax all 4 of those years.)  when it asked me how many years we claimed the American Opportunity Credit, I answered 3 (because of the 3 8863s) so the program wants to take the AOC again.  Is that ok?  I can't help but wonder why it didn't take the AOC last year.

Form 8917 is used to claim the Tuition and Fees Deduction, which is different from the American Opportunity Tax Credit.  So, based only on that fact, you can claim the AOC for a fourth year.

However, you should be sure that all of the other qualifications for claiming the AOC have been met, especially the one that asks if the student has completed the first four years of college as of the beginning of the tax year.
