Can I take the standard deduction (married filing jointly) PLUS the $4000 education tuition and fees deduction? HH income is $115,000

It depends what your AGI is. Income and AGI are not necessarily the same thing.

 

Here's how much the deduction is worth:

  • $4,000, if your MAGI was less than $65,000 as a single filer or $130,000 as married filing jointly.

For the tuition and Fees deduction (TFD), the income cut off for Head of Household is the same as Single filing status; $65,000 (for the $4000 deduction) and $80,000 for the ($2000 deduction).

 

So, you are not eligible for the TFD.  For those who are eligible, the TFD is in addition to the Standard deduction.
