To qualify for the Educator Expense deduction, you must be a teacher, instructor, counselor, aide, or principal that works at least 900 hours in a school that provides K–12 education. 

 

Also, federal income tax purposes, you cannot deduct homeschooling or K-12 education expenses as an education deduction. The education credits are for higher education (college). 

 

Some states offer a credit for K-12 education expenses. Check with your states Department of Revenue to see if there are any tax breaks for homeschooling or private schools.

  • However, these expenses may only be deductible if you claim the children as dependents.
