Question

Can someone explain why the amount of tax due increases after entering 1098t? I thought income greater than allowed would have been included in my W2 for the University.

Not necessarily.  If you have an excessive scholarship amount after being used to cover your tuition, it will be an additional income to your wages.  It will be reported as SCH on line 1 on the new Form 1040.
