Question

Discrepancy in 1098-T and 1042-S

I am a resident alien. For the semester of Spring 2020, I was supposed to receive a fellowship of $ X. The fellowship got entered into my student account in December 2019. But in January 2020, it was taxed $Y and a cheque was generated and sent to me.

As a result, my 1098-T has that additional $X but not the $Y taxes I paid, and my 1042-S has no mention of it at all.

I cannot decide if it counts as a 2019 income or a 2020 income.

For income, it counts as 2020 income.  For your 1098-T it appears it may have been reported to be matched up with the corresponding tuition (if it was reported as Box 5, Scholarships).

However, if it was paid to you in 2020 and the taxes were credited in 2020, the income will be reported on your 2020 tax return.
