Question

Do I enter the amount in box number 1 on my 1098-T form into the spot for education expenses? If so, where do I enter that information?

Yes, box 1 is for the education expenses used to calculate an education credit or deduction.  In fact, to completely enter information of a Form 1098-T, please follow theses steps:

In TurboTax online edition,

1. After sign into your account and select Take me to my return

2.  At the right upper corner, in the search box, type in 1098t and Enter

3.  Select Jump to form 1098T

4.  On screen, "Do you want to enter your higher education expenses?" answer Yes

5.  Go through the step-by-step interview questions

6.  On screen, "Did you get a 1098-T from school for 2017?" answer Yes.  Follow prompts to enter your info.

This year on the 2019, it did not ask if i received a 1098T. Instead it jumped to asking questions in which was confusing.

Do i need to enter the scholarship/grants amount when it ask about other grants and scholarships?

Revisit the part of the Turbo Tax return where you entered the educational expenses.

  • Federal Taxes Tab>deduction and credits>all tax breaks>Education>Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T>start or Edit
  • there should be an question that asked you if Did you get a 1098-T for the year 2019? say yes>at the bottom of the screen indicate skip upload

Now if you may have accidentally selected no on the screen and then you won't see any questions regarding the 1098 T. if that is the case, you may wish to delete all the information you put into the return and then start over just so you can enter the information exactly how it is listed on the form
