Question

Do I file taxes in my college state as well as home state?

I am from MA but currently going to college in SC as a full time student. My parents claim me as a dependent. In 2021 I had 3 jobs:

  • Job 1 is in MA and lists my MA address on my W2
  • Job 2 is in SC and lists my MA address on my W2
  • Job 3 is in SC and lists my SC college address on my W2

I know I need to file state taxes in MA. Do I just list and include income from all 3 jobs or just 1 & 2?

Do I also file in SC as a non-resident? If yes, do I select the SC county I live in for college or use the "Outside of SC in US" option? And again, which jobs do I list and include income from?

Thank you!

Q. I know I need to file state taxes in MA. Do I just list and include income from all 3 jobs or just 1 & 2?

A.  All 3 job.  As a full year MA resident, you include, and pay tax on,  all your income, regardless of where earned.  MA will give you a credit or partial credit for any tax you pay to SC.

Q. Do I also file in SC as a non-resident?

A. Yes.

Q. If yes, do I select the SC county I live in for college or use the "Outside of SC in US" option?

A.  "Outside of SC in US" option

Q. Which jobs do I list and include income from?

A.  Like most states, SC requires you to report ALL your income.  After which, it "allocates" each piece of income as SC income or non-SC income.  So, you will only pay tax on jobs 2&3. See https://dor.sc.gov/forms-site/Forms/SchNR_2021.pdf
