I’m an unemployed college student. Do I have to file my taxes? I pay rent and have received financial aid (FAFSA) but I don’t have a job or anything.

If you have not received  or earned any type of taxable income in 2024 then you do not need to file a 2024 tax return.

What is considered taxable income? I only get an allowance from my parents for food and stuff.

Student loans are not taxable income or income of any kind.  Scholarships may be taxable income, if they exceed qualified expenses (tuition, fees, books and other course materials). Room & board are not qualified expenses.

If you are under 24, or a dependent, you do NOT need to file a tax return.

Why are you asking this question?

There's a new urban myth among college students that says they can get a $1000 from the government just for filing a tax form. For most of them, they simply aren't eligible. A full time unmarried student, under age 24, even if you don't qualify as a dependent, is only eligible for the refundable portion of the American Opportunity Credit if he supports himself by working. You cannot be supporting yourself on parental support, 529 plans or student loans & grants. It is usually best if the parent claims that credit.

You cannot claim the (up to) $1000 refundable credit if you are, or can be, claimed as a dependent by someone else.

I had no idea about the credit. It’s just that everyone has been talking about filing their taxes and I had no idea if I had to do so as well. My scholarships didn’t cover all of my expenses. I am a full time student and I am under 24.
