Do I need the receipts for books purchased for classes?

For the section on Education Expenses I  want to claim the amount for books purchased. I just don't have receipts. Can I still put a dollar amount in this section? Will it even make a difference?

Yes.

 

In case of an audit, you have to be able to prove to the IRS that you spent the amount on books which are required for your course.

 

If you do not have the receipts, try to find another proof of the purchase such as a credit card transaction or a cancelled check.
